This tour can be considered as the best of Croatia with classic highlights and extras that we believe are worthy of visiting during 15 days in Croatia.

This tour covers all the popular regions in Croatia, with a few hidden gems, from Castles in the North, across the Istrian peninsula, national park, and Dalmatian coast and islands.
We always try to do signature trips and provide more of the country for the complete experience in a period of time.  You will visit  Old towns, medieval fortresses, and learn all about Croatian history and culture – local specifics of the areas you are visiting, the uniqueness of the architecture, and local legend and stories. You will see two of the eight National parks ( Plitvice and Krka), six of the twelve  UNESCO sites( Poreč basilica, Plitvice, Zadar walls,  Diocletian’s Palace in Split, Dubrovnik Oldtown, and Ston as the place on the UNESCO access list, Islands of the Adriatic sea, Korčula, charming Elafiti and more.

FULL ITINERARY

16 Days: Best of Croatia,classic highlights and hidden gems, Istria and cycling Dalmatia

Day 1: Arrival to Croatia, Zagreb and sightseeing

Welcome to Croatia and its capital Zagreb. Upon your arrival at the airport, you will be welcomed with your name on a sign and transferred to your hotel in Zagreb center. Zagreb is the capital and the biggest city in Croatia, the administrative center of the country with about 800 000 people living in it. The city center is easily walkable, and there are no worries to get lost. Your schedule today depends on your arrival time. If you arrive early enough you may take a guided tour of the city to learn about local attractions. We suggest walking the Lower town and walking Gradec and Kaptol, two historic parts of Zagreb. Attractions you will see along the way are Ban Jelačić square, Catherdal, St.Mark Square, and more. If you would like to see the unusual thing we suggest visiting the Museum of broken relationships! All the main attractions and restaurants are within walking distance from your hotel. Once again, WELCOME!

Day 2: Leaving Zagreb , visiting Hum and overnight Istria

Today you will leave continental Zagreb and go towards the biggest Croatian peninsula called Istria. You will go to Istria and to the “smallest town in the world”- HUM. Hum is a small charming place in the middle of Istria known for “glagoljica” ancient Croatian letter, and for the fact it meets the requirements in the past to be called a town although it is a tiny place. Glagoljica is a Croatian letter that is not in use anymore but places like this one are important for understanding ancient Croatian history. Hum is so small you can walk it all in 10 minutes. Considering you will be in an area that is world-famous for truffles if you would like to do truffle hunting, this is the place to do it. You may have lunch at a small local restaurant before continuing to kone of the oldest settlements in Istria called Poreč. Poreč like many other places in Istria has an ancient history, and the Old town has been founded by Romans. Poreč is also famous for the Euphrasium Basilica from the 6th century, which is of the UNESCO world heritage sites in Croatia. The old town is easy to navigate and easily walkable on foot.

Day 3: Explore medieval inland of Istria

Today you will explore the inland of Istria. Istria is the biggest Croatian peninsula, known for its great history, olive oil, wines, and truffles! Istria is also the most developed region in Croatia, including tourism as well. The western coast of Istria with towns, Umag, Novigrad, Poreč, Rovinj is the most popular part. However, the inland of Istria, sometimes called the Little Tuscany, is what makes Istria what it is. Little Town on the top of the hills, vineyards, and olive grows, makes this part of Croatia look like a fairytale. Interesting fact: Istra has been declared as the best Olive region in the world several times in a row! You will start exploring from the Buje area, and then take the route through villages Grožnjan and Oprtalj. Grožnjan is a small charming place on the top of the hill known for its artistic colony. Oprtalj is a great place on your way to stop and have lunch at family restaurant next to city loggia. You final destination today will be  Motovun, the biggest of the small medieval towns and  on the top of the hill in middle Istria, Motovun origins from the 13 century and  It is known for 3 layers of city walls that were used for protection, and also known for the longest staircase in Croatia. From Motovun, you will enjoy a beautiful view of the local scenery. Did you know that Istria and especially the area around Motovun had the highest density of truffles in the ground? One of the biggest truffles ever was found in this area. If you would like to taste local specialties, truffles are definitely at the top of the list. Enjoy!

Day 4: Explore Rovinj and Pula

Today you will explore Rovinj and Pula, probably the two most famous towns in Istria. Rovinj is known for its little charming peninsula which is easy to walk around. At the top of the peninsula stand the patron church of St.Euphemia. Legends say when St.Euphemia was 15 years old, she was arrested by Diocletian's soldiers, (the same Diocletian whose palace you will visit in Split) and when she refused to give up Christianity, she was tortured with cruelty (on a wheel). She still remained loyal to Christ and was thrown to the lions who eventually killed her but did not devour her body. Her body was brought in Rovinj in year 800 ad. and since then we have had a connection the town After Rovinj, you would go to Pula. Pula is the biggest town in Istria and it is famous for the Roman amphitheater which was built in the 1st century, and it is a trademark of Pula as one of the top 10 biggest amphitheaters the Romans built! Together with the amphitheater, there are a few other ruins in Pula that we recommend visiting, such as the August temple, Arch of Sergii, and more.

Day 5: Hiking and exploring Plitvice Lakes National Park and Zadar visit, Skradin overnight

Today you will explore Plitvice lakes, the most famous Croatian National Park. The lakes of Plitvice are a unique design of nature famous across the globe for their beauty. Since 1979 the Park has been a part of the UNESCO World Heritage register. Plitvice is home to about one-third of all known orchids in Croatia and more than 150 species of birds. During this day you will walk the chosen paths, through mostly beech forests, and see many waterfalls. You will experience the best sights the park has to offer which will provide a great opportunity to take many photos. In the national park, there are 16 named lakes, and many small ones, that you will walk around, however, it is only 2 % of the park in total. The rest of the park is forests, and some places are not even allowed for visitors. It takes about 4-5 hours to do the loop of the lakes from Lower lakes to Upper and back! After plitvice lakes you will leave continental Croatia and go to Dalmatia where you will explore Zadar. One of the places that are worth visiting in Dalmatia is the historic peninsula of Zadar. A unique place, and the biggest north Dalmatian town. There is a lot to be seen and do in Zadar, from ancient Roman ruins that you can walk above on the glass floor to one of the best ice cream places in Dalmatia. Zadar is gaining popularity more and more lately thanks to 2 unique modern pieces of art: Greetings to the Sun and Sea pipe organs. In Zadar, you can see layers of history, from Roman ruins, through medieval buildings to modern architecture. And, this is the place with one of the best ice creams you will find in Croatia. After exploring Zadar, you will go to Skradin. Skradin is a small town and marina, at the entrance of the National Park Krka so you would be between the first ones in the morning to visit the park and avoid the crowd!  

Day 6: Explore National park Krka

Today you will explore another beautiful highlight of Croatia, the National park Krka. Krka is the name of the 72.5 km long river and the river itself with 7 waterfalls for most of that length is a National park. After exploring the biggest waterfall, Skradinski Buk, you will drive to see another waterfall and area called Roški slap. Roški slap is a less busy area, and it offers an opportunity for nice walks or hikes in the area. For the end, we suggest visiting little Islet Visovac in the middle of the river with a still active Franciscan monastery on it. You probably will not see any monks but the local guide will take you on a 20 min tour of the island. Apart from the beautiful waterfalls, the Park is also well known for its multiple endemic species of birds, fish, and amphibians. Did you know: You can also visit, as part of the park, a place which used to host the oldest power plant( 1895) in Europe. People in the neighboring Šibenik area were the first ones in Europe with electricity.  

Day 7: Split and Diocletian's palace

Today you will explore the biggest town on the Dalmatian coast called Split. Split is known for Diocletian’s palace, built as a retirement home for Roman emperor Diocletian at the turn of the fourth century AD as a haven. Although the palace has changed its appearance over the centuries, with its surroundings becoming a medieval city, it is still one of the best-preserved examples of antique palaces. Some not-to-be-missed sites within the palace include the Peristil, Golden Gate, and St Gregory statue, and the cathedral and local promenade. Diocletian’s palace is built in the 4th century and since 1979 it is on a UNESCO heritage list as one of 12 UNESCO locations in Croatia. The picturesque center is perfect for sightseeing and long walks among its numerous streets and historical monuments, beautiful architecture from Roman to modern times. We suggest visiting the substructures of the palace since they are very well preserved and in original size as in Roman times. 

Day 8: Visiti to Korčula town and island

Today you will leave Hvar and continue exploring the Dalmatian coast. Your next destination is Korčula island and the town. The name of this Croatian island i derives from the Greek -Korkyra, which gives you an idea that this island was inhabited in B.C in Greek times. Even before the Greeks were here there was life on the island as archeologists found proof of human presence older than 7000 years. Korčula today is known for its beauty, hidden beaches, and authentic indigenous local white gapes and wines, Grk and Pošip. The Old Town Korčula is one of the finest examples of Venetian architecture on the Dalmatian coast, and most likely the birthplace of Marko Polo since it is known that the Polo family originates from this place. Small as it is, Korčula town is easy for exploring on foot!

Day 9: Cycling on Korčula island, east side

Korčula is one of the nicest south Croatian islands, and as the name stands for 2 things- Island Korčula and the town Korčula. Old town Korčula is on the UNESCO waiting list, and Croatia hopes to get another member on the world heritage list soon! The name itself derives from the Greek -Korkyra, which gives you an idea that this island was inhabited in B.C in Greek times and even before as in one of the settlements, Vela Luka, archeologists found proof of human presence alder than 7000 years. Korčula today is known for its beauty, hidden beaches, and authentic indigenous local white wines, Grk and Pošip. And, of course, it is a great place for Cycling in Croatia, as the South is probably the nicest part of the Dalmatian coastline. The Old Town Korčula is one of the finest examples of Venetian architecture on the Dalmatian coast, and most likely its the birthplace of Marko Polo, since it is known that the Polo family originates from this place. Small as it is, Korčula town is great for exploring by foot! With all mentioned above, Korčula is also a great cycling destination due to multiple route options, from easy to challenging, which you will be able to choose depending on your preferences. Cycling today takes place through local villages, along the coastline, visit local wineries, and to sandy beaches!

Day 10: Cycling across Korčula Island

On another fun day of cycling, you will cycle across the whole island of Korčula. This route offers some great sea views, scenic downhills, and good rides up. If you wish one of the days to be more challenging, this can be it. Island is long, and cycling across the whole island is quite attractive and scenic. You will pass through local villages, and next to the most famous wine-growing region on Korčula, villages Čra and Smakvica, known for local authentic sorts of grapes called Pošip. A visit to the local winery is an option for those who wish to taste local wines. Your route will take up to a scenic sea view ride, and finally will finish at the Old town Korčula area. After cycling, you can use the rest of the day to enjoy the Dalmatian coastline on one of the local beaches.

Day 11: Cycling Pelješac peninsula and exploring Ston

The next part of the Croatian coastline you will be cycling on is the Pelješac peninsula. In Croatia, Pelješac is a synonym for red wines, or as the locals call it- black wine. Pelješac is the second biggest Croatian peninsula situated in Dubrovnik county known for its natural beauty and for 2 brands, Ston and Dingač. The first one is Ston, one of the very rare 100% planned and built Croatian cities on the Croatian coast, known for the - longest fortified system in Europe, Ston city walls the oldest active salt plant on the whole Mediterranean, still active and still producing salt as they did in the 14th century and for a long tradition of growing oysters and muscles. Another thing that Pelješac is known for, is red wine. The whole peninsula is basically a wine region and Pelješac is home to the most famous red wine in Croatia, which got its name by the position where is grown - Dingač. This position of Dingač is unique for its steep slopes, up t 70 degrees, and since 1964 it is protected by the Geneva convention for its authenticity. Only the wine from these vineyards can be called Dingač and nowhere else in Croatia, or the World. It would be a shame to not taste some of that famous wine and that's why we will stop at one of the local family-owned wineries for wine tasting. Your cycling route will go through the peninsula and through one of the most scenic roads in the Dingač region with vineyards and sea views along the way, If preferred you can stop at some of the most famous local wineries for wine tasting. Our cycling will finish in the charming village where you can stop for a swim on one of the many small beaches that the Dalmatian coast is known for. If you would like to finish your cycling with use of a stand-up paddleboard, while enjoying the sea, it can be arranged with the previous announcement. You would spend the afternoon and evening in Ston. We recommend walking the Ston walls as the main attraction in town while finishing your day enjoin great local cuisine!

Day 12: Cycling and swimming in National park Mljet

Today you will explore  Mljet, one of the most beautiful islands on the Dalmatian coast. Mljet is often called the greenest Croatian island. According to legend, Mljet is the place where Calypso captured Ulysses in Greek mythology. Whether true or not, most of the names on the island are of Greek origin, and you can even visit Ulysses Cave. The western part of the island is a National park since 1960, and it is the first protected maritime area in Adriatic. The national park is known for its lakes inside of the island and a little islet of St.Maria in the biggest lake with the Benedictine monastery from the 12th century on it. You will visit the islet with a small boat, operated by the National Park. In 10 Minutes you can walk around the whole islet that's how small it is. This beautiful piece of Dalmatian coast around the lakes is great for walking or cycling surrounded by beautiful green pine forests. The cycling route goes along the sea, and it is suitable for beginners as well. There is always the possibility for swimming options, as lakes are always at least 2 Celsius warmer than the open Adriatic sea.

Day 13: Cycling from Ston across hinterlands towards Dubrovnik

Today you will go off the beaten path and cycle backroads and hinterlands of roughed Dalmatia. You will leave Ston and Pelješac Peninsula and cycle towards Dubrovnik. You will go to Dubrovnik hinterland towards the East, and cycle on local backroads and old Napoleon road with sea views. You can decide to take a longer or shorter version and accordingly see places along the way, such as the Oldest arboretum in the Mediterranean in the village of Trsteno.  Trsteno was discovered by a wider audience since this was one of the locations for the popular Game of the thrones series, still, it is never busy. You will spend the rest of the afternoon in Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik- as Lord Byron said: The Pearl of the Adriatic, a UNESCO site with the biggest walls in Europe. We suggest walking the city walls, the second biggest in the world. At places, the wall is approximately 75 ft high, which makes it a great sightseeing point to take photos of beautiful scenery. We are sure you would like to explore the city and do not be afraid to get lost in many stone streets, and if not tired, a guided tour in the evening might take place to introduce you to the rich history of this unique place!

Day 14: Private boat trip to Elaphiti islands - Lopud and Koločep

Today in the morning you will explore Dubrovnik Archipelago and Elafiti islands. Some of the most popular ones are Lopud and Koločep as this is the best 1-day boat trip in the area.  Small as they are, with no cars on the islands are the perfect crowd getaway. Both of these islands have only about 100+ people living on them. These islands are also rare places with real sandy beaches on the Dalmatian coast. Most of the coast is rocky and rugged, so places like this are highly appreciated in Croatia. The Lopud island once functioned as the summer residence for Dubrovnik’s nobility, while also being an important agricultural spot, but nowadays tourism became the focal point of the local economy. There is only one village on Lopud with the same name. Lopud and Koločep boat trip The interesting fact is that the highest palm trees on the whole Mediterranean age grow on this little island. Another island - Koločep, is the Southernmost inhabited island in Croatia. It is only 2.4 square miles big, with approximately 100 people living on it during the whole year. There are no cars on Koločep, or as the local people call it Kalamota, and it is great for walking/hiking on it. This jewel of green oases is only 20 minutes from Dubrovnik with a boat and once you walk on it seems like you are somewhere far away from the city crowd. Local secret: on this island, you will find a great little family-run restaurant that serves the best-grilled calamari you will find in Croatia! If you like scenic walks both of these two islands have a beautiful seaside path on the Southside of the islands. Today, you will have options for swimming, snorkeling, easy walking, hiking, and cave visit, you name it. 

Day 15: Dubrovnik old town and the city walls

Dubrovnik- as titled - The Pearl of the Adriatic, UNESCO site with the biggest walls in Europe. You will be introduced to a rich history of Dubrovnik on a guided tour if preferred, where you will be encouraged to ask any questions you might have about this fascinating place. You will walk the main street Stradun, see Onorfious fountain, Rectors palace, Old port, Orlando's column, and more. We suggest walking the city walls, the second biggest in the world. At places, the wall is approximately 75 ft high, which makes it a great sightseeing point to take photos of beautiful scenery. We also recommend visiting Mt SRĐ, where at the very top of the hill still proudly stands a fortress Imperial built at the beginning of the 19th century by Napoleon’s army. At the top of the hill, you will see Dubrovnik and the area as on your palm. You can take the cable car to go to Srđ, hike up, take a taxi, or you will be taken there if part of your program! We are sure you would like to explore the city, so do not be afraid to get lost in many stone streets. The town is quite small and where ever you go you will end with the walls, or just go down and you will always end on the level of the main street. In the last couple of years, Dubrovnik gained some popularity by being Kings Landing in the series Game of Thrones, so you might recognize a few movie locations as you walk around. Dubrovnik is full of restaurants and there are lots of options to choose from for lunch or dinner. If you would like to go for a swim, on both sides of the Old town there are pebble beaches! Enjoy!

Day 16: Departure from Dubrovnik

Today is your departure day. You will be transferred to the airport in accordance with your schedule! Thank you very much for visiting Croatia, hope you had a nice time while exploring, and that you will go home with nice memories! Those who are staying extra time in Croatia will be given instructions according to their schedule.     Unique Personal Service for 100% Fun in Croatia

    Roberto (Robi) Pincevic is the best. He is an honest, genuine, and funny person, which made our Soul of Croatia Destination Company trip a very special experience. Robi is modest, so doesn’t really talk about it, but he won a prestigious REI TOP GUIDE award several years back…he knows what he is doing. What we appreciated most is that the VALUE that Robi provides is extremely high, worth every penny. Because of his local knowledge and relationships, our June 2023 private 12-day land and catamaran tour for a family of five was super-efficient: * We are certain that he SAVED US A DAY OR TWO by carefully planning out where we wanted to go at the correct day and time to avoid lines and crowds, especially at the National Parks such as Plitvice, Krka, and Mljet. * Simple things like knowing the central hotel location or the best place to park the van made a big difference. * Because Soul of Croatia is a family run business (we had the pleasure of meeting his young family), Robi was physically with us every step of the way, guiding, driving and skippering.     Amazing 2 week adventure in Slovenia and Croatia

    We just returned from a fantastic 2 week tour of Slovenia and Croatia organized by Robi. This is the second trip that I have planned with Robi and he did an amazing job of planning both of the trips as we did a combination of self guided and guided holiday. The first trip was a mother/daughter trip and the second trip was 2 couples. All of the logistics were co ordinated by Robi and we did not have to worry about airport transfers, ferry tickets, accommodations or city guides. Robi was only a text away - which was very reassuring if there were any problems that arose. He also checked in with us a few times a day and gave us relevant information. Robi is very passionate about Croatia and is very knowledgable about all things from wine to history, sports and nature. I would highly recommend Robi if you are planning a trip to Croatia/Slovenia. I am very tempted to come back for a third adventure !!! Thank you Robi for organizing such a wonderful holiday for us!!

    Incredible 6-day Cycling Trip on Dalmatian Coast

    We just returned from an absolutely incredible 6-day cycling trip in Croatia and the Dalmatian Coast and I honestly don't know how we could have had the trip we did without Robi's expert help. We specifically wanted a more tailored experience, that would allow us to adjust routes, difficulty, etc. as needed (we are intermediate cyclers) and didn't like the idea of being in a large impersonal tour group. Robi's guidance and experience met those needs perfectly. He provided all the cycling materials (bikes, helmets, etc.), as well as all the necessary logistical coordination (ferries, van support, airport transfer, etc.) that we needed. This made it so easy, knowing we just needed to arrive and everything was taken care of. Outside of that, each day we were given full freedom to select and adjust the planned route (they also provided route options!) based on our skill level or just how we were feeling that day, which was absolutely monumental. It was also just our group in the van (5 cyclists) and we all knew each other, so making these adjustments and taking the time we needed was easy and we knew we didn't need to meet any expectations or timelines of a larger group. By the end, our cycling guide (Goron) felt like a friend and an integral part of our crew. Outside of the cycling, our arranged accommodations were all selected thoughtfully and with our criteria in mind. Each was clean, well-located and included all the necessary amenities. In each location (Split, Hvar, Korcula, Ston), we were just a short walk to see the town, have dinner, and explore the area. Robi and Goron were also able to provide local recommendations in each location, including wine and olive oil tastings during the bike rides. I would absolutely recommend that anyone work with Robi to create their perfect trip to Croatia. It was an absolutely once-in-a-lifetime experience and I credit him completely!
